The Medical Laboratory Technician program equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills for employment in a medical laboratory.
Participants will gain education and training in specimen collection and processing, administering ECGs, setting up Holter monitors, and utilizing laboratory equipment.
Additionally, they will cultivate a professional attitude and demeanor essential for interactions with patients in proximity.

The program spans 50 weeks, encompassing a 2-week Experiential Learning Simulation course and a 4-week practicum involving on-the-job training, conducted offsite in collaboration with potential employers. It offers a comprehensive foundation of skills and experience, combining classroom instruction with industry experts and the application of knowledge to real-life,
hands- on activities.

As the role of MLA/T continues to evolve, there are expanding employment opportunities in clinics, private laboratories, and hospital laboratories.
Additionally, positions are available in government, research, and veterinary laboratories.

Kindly be aware of the following:
1. Language Proficiency: Prospective applicants must exhibit language proficiency as a
prerequisite for admission.

2. Criminal Background Check: Before entering field placement, a current criminal
background check, inclusive of a vulnerable section screening, is mandatory. Specific
criminal convictions may impede participation in placements and completion of the
program.

3. Health Requirements: Your health should enable you to effectively navigate the
instructional program, clinical placement experiences, and meet the health standards
mandated by clinical placement settings.

4. Clinical Placements: The program placement coordinator organizes clinical placements,
which may be situated outside of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Students are
responsible for funding their own travel, accommodation, meals, and tuition associated
with these placements.

5. To advance within the program, students are required to achieve a grade of 70% or
higher in each course. Graduation eligibility necessitates successfully passing all
courses with a minimum grade of 70% or higher, along with fulfilling all course
requirements, including the practicum, within the designated timelines.

6. Participants in the Medical Laboratory Technician program are required to fulfill the
clinical requirements set by the program. Prior to undergoing a practicum experience,
students must have the following documents on record at the College:

. Documentation verifying the necessary immunizations.
. Valid certification in CPR/First Aid.
. A clear Vulnerable Criminal Police Record Check.
TRANSITIONING FROM CLASSROOM TO REAL-WORLD APPLICATION
Acquire up-to-date knowledge and industry best practices firsthand from our expert
instructors on-site, and further enhance your skills through practical experience in
laboratories off-site.
Engage in hands-on learning within our fully equipped and automated diagnostic
laboratory.
Participate in training sessions involving various state-of-the-art laboratory equipment,
including practical experience in blood collection, ECG administration, and more.
Prepare for CSMLS & MLPAO certification through online review classes and mock
exams, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the material.
The CSMLS certification exam must be undertaken within 12 months of graduation. The
designation of Certified MLA/T will be granted upon the successful completion of this
examination. The provincial MLPAO certification examination is offered 3 times a year. The
designation of MLA/T will be granted upon the successful completion of this examination.

                         ADMISSION CERITERIA
Possession of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or its equivalent is required.
Alternatively, individuals aged 18 or above can apply as mature students and complete
an entrance exam (Wonderlic).
Applicants will undergo an assessment interview and questionnaire to assess their
suitability for the Medical Laboratory Technician program.
Additionally, submission of an updated resume is required as part of the application
process.
